Short Biography

Since 2012, I have specialized in developing the foundations and solutions for Collaborative Intelligence (CI). CI is key to accelerating digital, business-model, and cultural transformation—representing a new approach to leadership, teamwork, and the organization of knowledge. In a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) environment, an individual can achieve little alone; the collaboration of many is required.

CI makes a reality of something everyone desires but which rarely occurs: true collaboration.

Through research conducted with global experts on the factors that facilitate or hinder collaboration within complex organizations—via the Innovation Center for Collaborative Intelligence (icxci.com) and the IC Chair funded by the Rafael del Pino Foundation—I have found that simply asking for collaboration is not enough. Even those who wish to collaborate often cannot. It is necessary to create processes that enable, guide, and mandate it. To this end, we have developed tools for deliberation, decision-making, and execution (Collaboratorium.biz), as well as cross-disciplinary educational resources (Dontknowschool.com).

I have helped accelerate transformation in over 50 leading organizations, including Santander, BBVA, AEGON, P&G, Prosegur, A.T. Kearney, Indra, and Cáritas.

Current roles: Minsait (Indra) and my own start-ups.

Background: Business Administration degree from ICADE; marketing roles at Coca-Cola Spain and McDonald’s Corporation (Chicago); MBA from Kellogg (with honors); broker at the Chicago Board of Trade; and 10 years at McKinsey & Company, where I served as a Partner leading the Consumer Goods, Retail, and M&A practices. I have authored 50 articles and books—featured in outlets such as HBR and the WSJ—and am a frequent speaker at conferences.

In 2000, I co-founded and co-led a venture capital firm/accelerator at Banco Santander (Btobfactory). Focused on the B2B internet space, it secured $170 million in funding and launched 8 start-ups, including Structuralia (e-learning)—later sold to Warren Buffett—Aquanima (e-procurement), and ISOCO (AI). I also served as an advisor to the Global Marketing and Sourcing board at Banco Santander. Since 2012, I have served as founder and CEO of dontknow.net, a social network for knowledge, comprising 1,400 experts and 400 institutions. Together with the Cuban philologist Yoani Sánchez, I launched the online newspaper 14ymedio.com.

All of this has been possible thanks to extraordinary people.

I have 3 children. I collaborate with various foundations, including Caritas and the Peru Missions. I have run 5 marathons, and I enjoy soccer, tennis, skiing, and canoeing. I speak French and English.
